A taste of Cuba in your glass: 5 cocktails for sunny days

Cuba is not only famous for its music and tobacco, but also for its vibrant cocktail tradition. From classics that have gone around the world to lesser-known recipes, its cocktails are an invitation to travel with the palate. Here are five must-haves to savor the Caribbean Island even from the comfort of your own coach, if you wish.

Cuba Libre

This iconic cocktail only requires three ingredients: rum, cola, and lime. It’s perfect for those who enjoy smooth, citrusy flavors. Born in Havana in the early 20th century, the Cuba Libre—literally “Free Cuba”—was named in celebration of Cuban independence after the war with Spain. It’s said that American soldiers popularized the drink by mixing rum with Coca-Cola and a splash of lime.
Looking for something refreshing and easy to make? This cocktail has your name on it.

Our recommendation? Enjoy it with a Partagás Serie Club, the perfect pairing for this slightly sweet drink.

Canchánchara

Considered the oldest cocktail in Cuba, its origins date back to the Spanish War of Independence. It is said that the mambises prepared it in a gourd vessel called a jícara. Its flavor leans toward the sweet side, as the honey softens the strength of the aguardiente (a type of rustic rum or sugarcane spirit).

There are several methods of preparation, the classic ingredients are: honey, lemon, aguardiente, ice and water. A canchánchara drink is perfect if you are looking for drink with history and character. And it will be even more so if you pair it with a Cuban mini cigar like Montecristo Open Club.

Mojito

The undisputed emblem of Cuban cocktails, and the one that has put the island on the international map. Synonymous with sunny days, its mixture of white rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda has made it the favorite of thousands of people around the world.

If you sit down to enjoy a good Mojito on a terrace, don’t forget to light up Romeo y Julieta Puritos. In this experience, both the cocktail’s flavors and those of these cigarillos truly stand out.

Oh! And if you’re enjoying a Mojito with friends, here’s a fun fact to impress them: it’s believed that pirates like Francis Drake were already drinking a primitive version of the Mojito made with tafia and mint. A hit—even back in the 16th century!

El Presidente

It was born in the heart of the island, in 1920s Havana, and became the drink of choice for the elite during Prohibition in the United States. With a drier and more elegant profile than other Caribbean cocktails, its ingredients are white rum, dry or white vermouth, orange liqueur, and grenadine.

If you’re looking for the perfect cocktail for a more sophisticated evening, a Presidente is your ideal choice. And to cap off a night full of elegance, we suggest lighting up a Cohiba White Club. With this combination, we guarantee a harmony that perfectly captures the spirit of Havana: both strong and sweet.

Daiquiri

This last cocktail is pure tropical essence. It has only three ingredients (white rum, lime juice, and sugar), but its flavor is exceptional. It’s so famous that you’ll find all kinds of variations: strawberries, pineapple, and even grapefruit!

If you like more acidic flavors with adjustable sweetness, the Daiquiri is perfect for you. And the best part is that it pairs wonderfully with a Punch Mini!

As a final curiosity, this cocktail is named after Daiquiri beach, where it is said to have been created by an American engineer and later popularized by the famous writer Ernest Hemingway.

These five cocktails are true gems of Cuban mixology. We encourage you to try them this season and discover your favorite. To enjoy them at their best, we suggest always using Cuban rum, and don’t forget to serve them with plenty of ice. If you add some good rumba music in the background, you’ll be in Havana before you know it!
