In the heart of London, we find Michael Smurfit, a young man who, after completing an internship at a family business branch in Alcalá de Henares and finishing his International Relations studies in Madrid, is now starting his professional career in the English capital. What at first seemed like a simple, casual chat with a reserved young man quickly turned into an interesting discussion about his relationship with Cuban cigarillos.
How did you start smoking?
Being celiac, there are many things I can’t enjoy, like beer or whiskey. And for an Irishman, believe me, that’s a real challenge. I was missing out on those everyday pleasures that others could afford, and I was drawn to tobacco thanks to my grandfather’s influence. He has been a smoker all his life, and I’m the only one of his grandchildren who has been able to sit with him for a full hour to enjoy a good smoke. That experience has created a very special bond between us.
Why Cuban cigarillos?
I’ve always been interested in getting to know consumer products like chocolate, rum, and of course, tobacco. I knew about the legendary reputation of Cuban tobacco; the island’s unique combination of climate and soil produces flavours and aromas that are impossible to replicate elsewhere. When I started smoking, I wanted to try these flavours, but Cuban cigars were completely out of my reach, especially because of the prices in Ireland, which are sky-high due to specific regulations. If a pack of cigarettes can cost 25 €, imagine what a Cuban cigar costs. So, I opted for the more affordable alternative: Cuban cigarillos. At a competitive price, they offered me the authentic taste of Cuban tobacco, which was an excellent way to get started.
Do you still smoke minis?
Yes, a lot! (laughs). I no longer see them as just an alternative to cigars; they’ve become an ideal, very convenient option. I love how practical they are when I’m on the go, and the best part is that I can enjoy different brands in a single day, or even in a single hour, without compromising on the full enjoyment of their flavours.
What’s your favourite Cuban mini?I have several favourites. The Cohiba Wide Short is one of them, mainly because of its size. But in the mornings, I prefer a Trinidad Short, which is lighter and more refined. And other times, I go for a Romeo y Julieta Club, smooth and elegant.
